Sean O'Neil showed up for senior day Saturday at Valley Stream Central needing 50 points to become the first boys basketball player in school history to score 1,000 in his career. He ended up getting it all in one shot - plus one. O'Neil scored 51 points to lead Valley Stream Central to an 80-50 non-league victory over Cold Spring Harbor. "This kid has played so hard for me for the four years I have had him and I could not be happier that he accomplished something like this in his last regular-season home game," coach Michael Wimmer wrote in an email. "After the game, he thanked all the seniors who were on the court that gave up their chances to score to help him hit this milestone. "These kids are exactly the kind of teammates that every player should strive to be like and we are so lucky as coaches to be a part of this group." It was part of an exceptional all-around game for the 5-11 guard. Besides the points, O'Neil also grabbed 10 rebounds and made eight steals. "He clearly came into this game with a mindset where he was not going to let us lose," Wimmer wrote. "When he banked in a shot from the opposite foul line to end the third quarter and give him 39, I knew he had a real chance to do something special." Jaiya Vera added 10 points, eight assists and five rebounds and Logan Douglas had nine points and five rebounds for the Eagles (9-5). Graham Lynch scored 18 for Cold Spring Harbor (9-6).
