HIGHLIGHTS

Carey 49, Elmont 27: Dominic Rutigliano was the athlete who Mike Stanley knew “would run the offense” for Carey. He did just that completing 24 of 40 passes for 332 yards and three touchdowns, along with three carries for 21 yards and a touchdown leading Carey to a Nassau II victory over Elmont, 49-27, yesterday. “Rutigliano worked really hard this week to make these throws happen,” Stanley said. “Any high school kid who throws for 300 yards should be proud. He was good at being patient and taking what was there.” To start the third quarter, Rutigliano threw a 50-yard TD pass to Rich Mejia. He also had a 48-yard TD pass to Nick Giacalone at the 10:07 mark in the fourth. Giacalone’s day was interesting to say the least. On the first play of the game, Giacalone took a big hit according to Stanley. He stayed out the first half and came back in the third quarter with a revenge. He caught nine passes for 144 yards and a touchdown. The last score of the game came from him on a 45-yard interception return. “Giacalone showed a lot of courage coming back to play,” Stanley said. “He shook it off and came back strong.” On defense, Stanley said Alex Lake did an excellent job defending Elmont’s Chester Anderson, who Stanley described as a “matchup nightmare.” Devin Hartz had a sack for a 14-yard loss and recovered a fumble. Andre Blanc also had a sack for 13 yards.
