HIGHLIGHTS

Riverhead 19, Deer Park 12: Christian Pace's 22-yard touchdown pass to Tommy Powers' with two seconds remaining in the game gave Riverhead the win in its Suffolk II league opener. Powers made a one-handed 27-yard catch two plays prior to set up the touchdown. Powers had seven receptions for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Keshaun Jones' one-yard touchdown run tied the game at 12 for Deer Park with 1:29 remaining. Pace was 12-of-17 for 168 yards and two touchdowns, Lawrence Bishop had 20 carries for 120 yards, and Jarvis Gillian ran for 72 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. A key play in the game came at the end of the first quarter when Jones intercepted a Pace pass in the endzone and took it back 90 yards to the Riverhead 10-yardline. Darnell Chandler made the touchdown saving tackle to prevent Jones from scoring. The Blue Waves defense proceeded to make a goal line stand to prevent Deer Park from scoring early on in the second quarter. Ben Merkel led Riverhead with 10 tackles and a sack and Tyjon Hawkins had eight tackles, a sack, and a blocked PAT.
