Massapequa 35, Hempstead 34: A missed extra point in the fourth quarter and a late defensive stand allowed Massapequa to hold on for a thrilling one-point win over Hempstead in a wild Nassau-I season-opener. Following a 35-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Saybien Barron to Lykeem Bethea with 5:30 remaining in the fourth quarter, Hempstead trailed by one. However, Hempstead failed to convert the extra point, leaving Massapequa with a 35-34 lead. Hempstead would regain possession later in the fourth, but Massapequa's defense got the necessary stop to come away with a close win. After finishing the first quarter with an 8-7 lead, Massapequa was outscored by Hempstead 21-20 in a second quarter that featured three touchdowns by both offenses. Massapequa quarterback G. Gibbons completed two of four passes for 15 yards, while rushing for 83 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. K. Galvin, Massapequa's other quarterback, went 8-20 passing with 117 yards, two interceptions and a touchdown pass. He also had 14 rushing attempts for 83 yards and a touchdown. A. Buckshaw had a big game, as he ran for 76 yards on 19 carries for Massapequa, finishing with two touchdowns. He also had one reception for 15 yards. C. Wasson had a solid game for Massapequa as well, compiling 25 yards, two receptions, one receiving touchdown and two sacks on the night. Despite the loss, Barron had a strong effort for Hempstead, as he tossed three touchdowns through the air - two to Jevon Andrews on 60 and 35-yard passes, and one to Bethea. Barron also had himself a 65-yard touchdown run.
