Alexis Fotopoulous scored 46 points last night to reach 2,000 career points, becoming the 21st high school girls basketball player in Long Island to reach the milestone. The senior guard, who has been on varsity since seventh grade, converted a free throw with 6:30 remaining to reach 2,000 during Hampton Bay’s 90-52 win over Miller Place in League VI. “It’s awesome,” said Fotopoulous, who is bound for Adelphi University. “When I started playing I always thought maybe 1,000 points but not 2,000. It makes me feel like all my hard work does pay off.” Fotopoulous, who hit six three-pointers and added 10 rebounds and eight steals, scored 19 points in the third quarter to blow the game open. When she reached her milestone point, the game was stopped and Fotopoulous was presented with a commemorative basketball. Her parents, Andrew and Helen, both of whom are teachers at Hampton Bays High School, came on to the court to congratulate their daughter. Fotopoulous is averaging 23.9 points per game this season. On Dec. 3, she became the Hampton Bays girls basketball program’s all-time leading scorer, breaking the previous record of 1,716 points. “She is Hampton Bays basketball,” coach John Paga said of Fotopoulous, who has guided the Baymen to back-to-back Class B county titles. “She has more range than most boys do. Nobody deserves it more than she does.”
