HIGHLIGHTS

Copiague 53, Ward Melville 51: Janiya Morris racked up 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and three blocks to lead Copiague (7-1) in Suffolk II action. Both of Morris' assists were on three-point field goals by sophomore guard Aaliyah Jones; the second of which broke the tie for good with six minutes left in the game. Jones hit a trio of three-pointers, finished with 11 points and also had two steals during a 16-7 run in the fourth quarter. During that same run, senior guard Kerah McHugh recorded three assists, two of which went to classmate guard Ja'Nyah Martin. Overall, McHugh logged four assists and a steal, while Martin added six points, three rebounds, four assists and the steal that jumpstarted the rally. Freshman guard Madison Mais registered 13 points, five rebounds, seven assists and a steal. Eighth-grade forward Fredricka Cooper totaled seven points, eight rebounds and a steal to help Copiague reach 6-0 in league play. For Ward Melville (5-2), senior guard Jenna Greek connected on four three-pointers and led all scorers with 22 points, while also adding a block. She also hit a running floater to beat the third-quarter buzzer and extend her team's lead to 36-33. Senior guard Jaclyn Engel chipped in 17 points, three rebounds and two steals and also scored her squad's final eight points to cut its deficit down to just two points with 20.7 seconds remaining. Sophomore forward Addison Scott led the visitors with eight rebounds and assisted on a three-pointer by Greek. Junior guard Quinlan Heilbron picked up five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Ward Melville is now 4-1 in league games.
