HIGHLIGHTS
Mepham 3, Port Washington 2: Mackayla Brown induced a ground out with the tying run on third base as Mepham (10-5) advanced to the Nassau AA playoffs. Mepham, Port Washington, Baldwin and Farmingdale were all tied for first place with 9-3 conference marks. However, the conference only had three postseason positions available. The two winners of today's game, and the winner of Wednesday's game between the losing team advances to the playoffs. An RBI-single by Samantha Arcese gave Mepham a 2-1 lead, and a throwing error later allowed Stephanie Burns to score and make it 3-1 in the fifth. Maddie Gallagher homered in the sixth to bring Port (12-4) within 3-2. Mepham won its final five regular season games to force this unique play-in situation for all four teams. “We just kept playing and didn’t worry about what everyone else was doing,†Mepham coach Mike Muscara said. “I think our kids treated these game like a playoff game. Even though we're young, we got a little taste of the playoffs.†The postseason is exactly what’s next for the No. 9 Pirates, who travel to face No. 8 Calhoun at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in a AA playoff game.
