HIGHLIGHTS

Clarke 1, Carey 0: Sarah Cornell tossed a perfect game with 17 strikeouts to lift Clarke to a 1-0 win over Carey in the Nassau ABC-I opener. It was the first perfect game for the senior pitcher, who is in her sixth year on varsity. Cornell reached a three-ball count just twice in the game, including in the seventh inning before getting the strikeout for the second out. "She hit her spots and she had excellent control of her rise ball,” Clarke coach Rachel Barry said of Cornell, who will play at Hofstra next season. “Sarah's goal this year is to not waste too many pitches. She showed today that she is here to compete.” Kirstin Cox singled in the top of the third inning, stole second, and came home on a sacrifice fly by Cornell to give Clarke a 1-0 lead. Sophomore third baseman Erin Connolly picked up the bunt at third and threw out the runner for the second out of the fifth inning to help preserve the perfect game. Cornell, who teamed with first-year full-time catcher Brooke Scherer, got a strikeout to end the game, which was a rematch of last year’s county championship. “She was as dominant as it gets,” Barry said. “She is looking to put her senior year in the record books.”
