Center Moriches 9, Hampton Bays 3: Kiley Nolan and Tori Fahie are bridesmaids no more. The senior captains of the Center Moriches softball team snapped a three-year run of finishing second-best in the county, and will graduate as champions.
The top-seeded Red Devils defeated Hampton Bays, 9-3, yesterday to win the Class B Suffolk County championship. Center Moriches, which fell in the championship game in each of the previous five seasons, captured their first county title since 2004.
Cierra Smith went 2-for-3, including a two-out, three-run double in the sixth to open an 8-3 lead.
Caroline Casey went 2-for-3 with three runs and Megan Ricci and Kayla Huber each went 2-for-4.
Fahie (2-for-4) hit an RBI double that tied the score at 1 in the first. Nolan tossed a complete game, allowing three runs, seven hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
Marly Tyler hit a two-run homer to bring No. 2 Hampton Bays (17-5) within 5-3 in the top of sixth.
Center Moriches (20-2) plays Oyster Bay in the Long Island championship at 4 p.m. on June 7 at Mitchel Athletic Complex.
"With the thousands of hours of softball they’ve put in," Center Moriches coach Rich Roberts said of his players, "I know it was gratifying for them to finally break through."
