West Islip 8, Smithtown West 7: West Islip is back in a familiar place. Trevor Bovich scored three goals to lead No. 5 West Islip (12-6) in an 8-7 upset of No. 1 Smithtown West (16-2) in a Suffolk A semifinal on Friday. “We just played great team defense,†West Islip Coach Scott Craig said, pointing to the play of Ian Prate, Nick Capone and AJ Ilchert, who shut down Smithtown’s high powered trio of Ryan Keenan, Christian Zawadzki and Matt Heldberg. “We lost some games – including two double-OT games – and we lost by Chaminade by two goals so against all the best teams we competed very tough,†Craig said. “We just didn’t finish the deal but tonight we did†Bovich scored a key goal late in the third quarter to give the Lions a 7-5 lead and scored the final goal to push the Lions ahead 8-6. West Islip will play Smithtown East in the finals on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Stony Brook University.
