West Islip 9, Smithtown East 8: Ray Weber's two-out ground ball was misplayed for an error that allowed Kyle O'Neill to score the winning run for No. 2 West Islip in game one of a best-of-three Suffolk AA semifinal over No. 3 Smithtown East. West Islip (21-4) battled back after it trailed 6-2. The Lions scored a run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three more in the sixth, highlighted by a bases-loaded, two-run single by Nick Valenti (2-for-3, 3 RBIs). Smithtown East rallied and tied the score at 8 in the seventh. West Islip's Joe Valentino tossed 3 and 1/3 innings of one-run relief with a hit and three strikeouts, and a walk. "It shows our determination," West Islip coach Shawn Rush said. "We've got a bunch of gritty kids, and that's what it's going to take to be successful in the playoffs."
