It's often said that the finish is more important than the start. And yesterday, Ryan McEnerney proved that it doesn’t matter if you start, as long as you can finish. McEnerney scored off a through pass from Cory Santangelo with 25 minutes left as Sayville edged Comsewogue, 2-1, yesterday in League V boys soccer. "He came off the bench and scored a really nice goal, which was set up very well,” Sayville assistant coach Al Ellis said. His team improved to 12-0. James Thristino scored in the 29th minute to give Comsewogue a 1-0 lead. That sight has become familiar for the Warriors’ opponents this season as Thristino leads Suffolk with 23 goals. Comsewogue is 8-2. But after Thristino’s early goal, Sayville would have no more of it, clamping down defensively to take control of the game. “We switched the defense up after he scored,” Ellis said. “Senior defensemen Michael Farese took over and shut him down for the rest of the game.” Tyler McKenna tied it at 1 for the Golden Flashes with three minutes to go in the first half. The goal, Ellis said, gave Sayville a much-needed boost before halftime. "It set the tone for the game because we came right back and scored,” Ellis said. “It gave us confidence to come back and win the game.” McKenna’s goal was set up by a well-placed cross pass from Tristano. Goaltender Alex Spaun made six saves, including “one very important save” that maintained the lead in the second half, Ellis said. So what’s the future for undefeated Sayville? “It puts us in a good position to win the league title,” Ellis said. “We want to win the league title and get into the playoffs with a number one seed.” Sayville will continue their quest for an undefeated season when they visit Westhampton on Friday at 4pm.
